Four Ways To Think About The Cloud For Business In 2021

Read the Full Article on Forbes

I published this in Forbes in December 2020, right in the middle of the most dramatic cloud migration in history. Every organization was scrambling to enable remote work, and cloud was the answer to everything. My goal was to cut through the noise and give leaders four practical lenses for thinking about cloud strategy rather than just following the herd.

Key Takeaways

1

Cloud is infrastructure, not strategy. Too many leaders confused moving to the cloud with having a technology strategy. The cloud is a delivery mechanism. What you build on it is what matters.

2

Flexibility and scalability were the primary value propositions then, and they remain so now. But the definition of what needs to scale has expanded dramatically with AI workloads.

3

Security and governance cannot be afterthoughts. The organizations that built governance into their cloud architecture from day one are now the ones that can deploy AI responsibly at scale.

What I Would Add Today

The cloud conversation has evolved significantly since 2020. We are no longer debating whether to move to the cloud. The question now is whether your cloud architecture can support AI workloads, real-time inference, and the data pipelines that modern AI requires. I would add a fifth way to think about cloud: as the AI execution layer. Your cloud strategy is now inseparable from your AI strategy. The organizations I work with that are succeeding with AI all share one trait: they treated cloud as a strategic platform, not just a cost-saving exercise.
