Noah Boudreaux: How Operational Line of Site Creates Business and Employee Clarity
Read the Full Article on FalkcroftI shared my thoughts with Falkcroft on operational clarity, something most organizations think they have but actually do not. Leaders communicate strategy, assume it is understood, and then wonder why execution falls short. The gap between explaining something and having it understood at every level of the organization is where most strategies die.
Key Takeaways
You cannot have alignment without clarity. If people are working toward a goal and they are not sure why, that creates challenges that compound across the organization.
Clarity does not come from a single announcement or a quarterly all-hands. It comes from all the small conversations that happen after you initially state what you are doing and why. Those moments form the foundation of organizational alignment.
Line of sight connects individual contribution to enterprise outcomes. When employees can articulate both the destination and their role in reaching it, alignment becomes a natural byproduct rather than something you have to force.
What I Would Add Today
Line of sight becomes exponentially more important when AI changes how work gets done. If people did not fully understand their role before AI, they certainly will not understand it after AI reshapes their workflows. Leaders need to re-establish line of sight every time a significant process changes, and with AI, processes are changing continuously. I would also add that AI itself can be a tool for creating clarity: dashboards, real-time metrics, and automated reporting can make organizational performance visible in ways that were previously impossible. But the technology only works if leaders first establish the 'why' that gives those metrics meaning.
